NEW Mo¡¯Unga Full-Brother a Potential Headline Act
Friday, 4th March 2022Waikato Stud’s seven leading vendor titles at NZB’s annual Karaka sale since 2014 have been underpinned by relentless demand for the progeny of Savabeel (Zabeel-Savannah Success, by Success Express), and the all-conquering sire’s remarkable run of racetrack results this season has the respected nursery confident of another big sale in 2022. According to racingnews.co.nz, the likely headline act among an exciting draft of Savabeels is Lot 161, out of the O’Reilly mare Chandelier. The colt is a full-brother to Mo’unga, who scored superb Group 1 victories in last year’s Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Winx Stakes (1400m) before a flying finish for second in last weekend’s Gr1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield. “There’s a bit of attention around him, for obvious reasons,” Chittick said. “He’s got the flash brother, who ran such a great race first-up in Melbourne the other day. I’d say this colt is actually more forward than his brother was at the same stage. A big factor in that is the additional time he’s had, with the change in the sale date this year. Those extra few weeks have seen this colt really come into his own.”Mark Chittick with Mo'Unga's Savabeel full-brother (pic: Trish Dunell)
NEW MM to Field Mo¡¯Unga Expressions of Interest
Friday, 4th March 2022Meanwhile, on behalf of the entire's managing owner, TFI, Magic Millions has been tasked to present a rare opportunity to invest in superstar racehorse Mo'unga (Savabeel-Chandelier, by O’Reilly) as he prepares for an exciting career at stud. A multiple Group 1-winning son of champion sire Savabeel, Mo'unga has established himself as one of Australia's top performers with leading Sydney trainer Annabel Neasham. A Group 1 winner at thre, with a storming win in the Rosehill Guineas, Mo'unga earlier this season defeated champion mare Verry Elleegant (Zed) and company in the Group 1 Winx Stakes over 1400 metres. He is currently the highest Timeform rated 4YO entire racing in the Southern Hemisphere. After recording a slashing first up second placing in Saturday's Gr1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield, Mo'unga is next scheduled to face the starter in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes on March 19 at Rosehill - a track where he is unbeaten. Any new connections in Mo'unga will be able to enjoy the final stages of his racing career before he ultimately heads to stud as one of the most highly credentialed young prospects in the country. Mo'unga is free of Danehill blood and would provide the outcross option that many mare owners desire. "TFI's business model is to identify colts with pedigrees and develop them into lucrative stallion prospects," TFI's Racing and Bloodstock Manager Sally Williams said. "Our track record is solid with Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), Prague (Redoute’s Choice) and Anders (Not A Single Doubt) amongst the most popular first season sires to launch last season."NEW Drug Testing Agreement Hiatus Problematic
Friday, 4th March 2022The Horseracing Integrity Act (HISA) is set to take on most aspects of Thoroughbred Racing in the USA on 1 July 2022, but contract negotiations between the HISA board and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) have stalled, reports thoroughbredracing.com. Founded in 2000, USADA runs the drug testing for all USA Olympic and Paralympic sports and was listed in the HISA legislation as the preferred anti-doping agency subject to the execution of the contract. With the deadline for the HISA fast approaching, concerns around the future of the sport are increasing. "Without USADA's involvement the Horseracing Safety and Integrity Act is a worthless and ridiculous waste of time and racing is no better off," said Rick Abbott, a former member of the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission. "State racing commissions still lack the power to investigate and the courage to enforce their rules. Cheating and favoritism will proliferate like never before and racing will wither and die. If you think that won't happen, I have two seats to sell you on the finish line for the 2022 Arlington Million." The culture of drug use in American horseracing affects every other jurisdiction with the general public assuming that what happens in the USA happens everywhere. "I don't think the horse industry realises the plight it is in, and it desperately needs the integrity of USADA to help shore up its sad reputation. Cheaters are still cheating, horses are still dying, and public perception is still worsening," said Stone Farm's Arthur Hancock.NEW In Foal Daysee Doom Confirmed for Chairman¡¯s
Friday, 4th March 2022Elite Group 1-winning mare and former darling of the turf Daysee Doom (Domesday-See A Vicory, by Mister C.) is among the latest confirmed entries for the 2022 Inglis Chairman’s Sale. During a spectacular racetrack career in which the Australian public adored the Ron Quinton-trained mare for her tenacity and consistency, Daysee Doom won $1,244,725 in earnings, with her first 19 starts resulting in nine wins and a further five stakes placings. She defeated at least 20 fellow Group 1 winners during her career, with her finest hour coming in the 2018 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill where she was a stunning winner when carrying 57kg, joining an elite group of fillies and mares including Sunline, Emancipation and Bounding Away to win the race with 57kg or more. Daysee Doom will be offered at the Chairman’s Sale as part of the Sledmere Stud draft, in foal and believed to be carrying a colt to Coolmore’s star international stallion Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj). Jack Griffin, who bred and raced Daysee Doom, said the decision to sell her came with mixed emotions. “She’s got two beautiful youngsters on the ground already, an Exceed And Excel yearling colt and a Deep Field weanling filly, both of whom I’ll keep to race and they are both the most magnificent types, so I know she throws absolute top-quality progeny.” Griffin noted, “She’s just a fantastic mare in every way… she’s a great physical, already a beautiful producer and now some lucky person can continue the dream run that I’ve had with her from the start.” The 2022 Chairman’s Sale will be held at Riverside Stables on Friday May 6.Daysee Doom was always up for a fight (pic: Steve Hart)

Friday, 4th March 2022Winning the Gr3 Show County Quality (1200m) when first up last time in, the Joseph Pride-trained Private Eye (Al Maher-Confidential Queen, by Shamardal) will look to use his solid first up form and unbeaten heavy track form to run a positive race in the Gr1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick. Bred by Goodwood Farm and sold at the Magic Millions Adelaide Sale, a forward showing by the Proven Thoroughbreds syndicated runner, will be a boost for the breeders who offer a small but select draft of five at the upcoming Adelaide Magic Millions sale. A winner of the Gr1 Epsom Handicap last season over the Randwick mile, Private Eye has had two barrier trials in readiness for his first up effort, and while he will improve as he gets further into his campaign, the 1300m of the race in the heavy conditions which will play into the hands of the son of Group 1 Australian Guineas winner Al Maher (Danehill). With Annabel Neasham having already scratched Zaaki (Leroidesanimaux) from the race, with the 7YO set to contest the Gr2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington, race favouritism has fallen to Forbidden Love (All Too Hard-Juliet's Princess, by More Than Ready), a last start winner of the Gr2 Guy Walter Stakes by more than three lengths for Richard and Michael Freedman. The only other mare in the field will also prove hard to beat with the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained Lighthouse (Mizzen Mast-More Hoping (USA), by North Light) looking to improve from her last start second in the Gr1 CF Orr Stakes behind Tofane (Ocean Park).Private Eye is on the third line of betting for the Canterbury Stks (pic: Steve Hart)
Prebble Aiming to Out Fox Blamey Rivals
Friday, 4th March 2022With a potential stallion career on the horizon, the Paul Preusker-trained Lunar Fox (Foxwedge-Grant's Moon, by Malibu Moon) will be chasing his third black type victory when he lines up in Saturday's $300,000 Gr2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington. A winner of the Gr2 VRC Sires' Produce Stakes at two where the defeated runners included eventual Gr1 Golden Rose Stakes and Gr1 Caulfield Guineas winner Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), Lunar Fox surprised many at 3 when successful in the Gr1 Australian Guineas defeating a class field which once again included Ole Kirk, but also the Gr1 Blue Diamond winner Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa). Interestingly, it is roughly this time of year that Lunar Fox comes into form, with his stakes victories at 2 and 3 coming within a week of each other, just 12 months apart. Now, 4YO will line up in the Blamey Stakes at just his second run of his campaign, the same run of his Autumn campaign where he won the Guineas. With Champion jockey Brett Prebble in the saddle, the same hoop who partnered the Inglis Gold Yearling Sale graduate to success in both of his group victories, the pair will jump from barrier 2 in the ten-horse field. After finishing last first up this campaign when almost 8-lengths behind Corner Pocket (Toronado-Baize, by Commands) in the Listed The Elms Handicap, with that winner going for nine consecutive race wins when also lining up in the Blamey Stakes, Lunar Fox is going to need to improve significantly to take the prize, especially when you factor in the presence of dual Gr1 winner Zaaki (Leroidesanimaux-Kesara, by Sadler's Wells) who has committed to start in this race rather than at Randwick, but connections will be hoping that history repeats.Last Crop Yearlings by Quality Sires at Karaka
Friday, 4th March 2022Two seasons ago, the New Zealand racing industry lost four quality stallions, and buyers have their last chance to access their yearlings at the upcoming Karaka yearling sale, reports nzb.co.nz. The quartet comprises Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice-Grand Echezeaux, by Zabeel), Iffraaj (Zafonic-Pastorale, by Nureyev), Sacred Falls (O’Reilly-Igauzu’s Girl, by Redoute’s Choice), and Tavistock (Montjeu-Upstage, by Quest for Fame). Sire of eight stakes winners from only a few crops, Burgundy has only one yearling on offer, Lot 400, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Entriviere (Tavistock). Burgundy died in 2019, aged only 11, and was himself a Karaka graduate who went to be a multiple stakes winner. Four-time Gr1 winner Sacred Falls died in 2019 aged only ten, and his five stakes winners to date include Group 1 winner Aegon and Group 1 placed $3.7 million earner Icebath. Sacred Falls has nineteen yearlings in Book 1 and four in Book 2. Tavistock’s death in 2019 was a huge loss for racing, and the sire of seven Group 1 winners including Werther, Johnny Get Angry, Tarzino and Tavago, will be represented by sixteen yearlings in Book 1 and one in Book 2. Iffraaj, meanwhile, finished his shuttle run to New Zealand in 2019, and currently resides at Darley, England. Of his eleven Group 1 winners, Gingernuts, Jon Snow, Western Empire, Wyndspelle and Turn Me Loose were all born in New Zealand. He has eighteen yearlings in Book 1 and three in Book 2.Sacred Falls' untimely death was a big loss to the industry (pic: Steve Hart)
Race Fit Excelida Chases Frances Tressady
Friday, 4th March 2022With seven of the 11 accepted runners for Gr3 Tressady Stakes (1400m) either first or second up, the Ben and JD Hayes trained Excelida (Exceed And Excel-Lady Sayyida, by Iffraaj) has race fitness on her side. The mare has raced at least once every month since May 2021, highlighted by finishing a length third last time out in the Listed Barton Stakes behind Open Minded (Jimmy Choux) and Lighthouse (Mizzen Mast), with the Ciaron Maher and David Eustac-trained second placed mare finishing a gallant second next start in the Gr1 CF Orr Stakes, clearly highlighting the form. Racing in the silks of Brendan and Jo Lindsay of Cambridge Stud, the Trelawney Stud-bred and $460,000 Inglis Easter yearling sale graduate is yet to record a black-type victory, but with a stud career beckoning for the 5YO mare, Saturday's $200,000 race looks an outstanding opportunity to attain that goal. One of the five runners who contests the race fresh is the Symon Wilde-trained race favourite Sirileo Miss (Pride of Dubai-She's Sirius, by Galileo) who really came into her own last campaign, winning three of her four starts including the Gr3 Ladies Day Vase over 1600m at Caulfield, while another who is well in the betting is the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr trained Annavisto (Reliable Man-Avisto, by Tavistock), who ended her last campaign with a solid third behind Flying Mascot in the Gr3 Tesio Stakes, with that winner capturing the Gr3 Mannerism Stakes last Saturday over 1400m at Caulfield. With the rain causing havoc in Sydney, it is telling that four runners have made their way to Flemington for the race.Overpass Favoured in $750,000 Inglis Sprint
Friday, 4th March 2022Having always shown above average ability, but unable to record black type success at two and in the early part of his 3YO campaign, the Bjorn Baker trained Overpass (Vancouver-Walkway, by Exceed And Excel) resumed in outstanding form for his Autumn campaign, capturing the Gr2 Expressway Stakes from Forbidden Love (All Too Hard) and Anamoe (Street Boss), with the placed runners both recording Group 2 success at their next starts. While Overpass didn't manage to win at his next start, his second to John O'Shea's outstanding sprinter Lost And Running (Per Incanto) has the Darby Syndications-raced colt set to start favourite in Saturday's $750,000 Inglis Sprint down the Flemington straight. The best performed entire by Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Vancouver (Medaglia d'Oro), who recently transferred from Coolmore to Victoria's Woodside Park Stud, the Joshua Parr-ridden colt will start from the outside barrier in the 13-horse field. Unbeaten first up, winning the Inglis Banner on debut before the Gr3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes first up in her second campaign, the Ciaron Maher and David Maher-managed Sneaky Five (Fastnet Rock-Small Minds, by Canny Lad) looks very capable of running a huge race come Saturday. While not yet in the class of the Overpass or Sneaky Five, the Chris Waller-trained Able Willie (Written Tycoon-Lifesaver Lady, by More Than Ready) comes into the race off a last start fourth behind Mazu (Maurice), the same gelding he finished third to in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes earlier in his career.Overpass will have his second start down the Flemington straight (pic: Steve Hart)
Emotional Double for Jockey Harvey
Friday, 4th March 2022Trainer Todd Harvey had mixed emotions at Ascot's meeting on Wednesday after two of his runners won, reports rwwa.com.au. Harvey's father, well known former jockey and trainer Rob Harvey Jr, died on Saturday. "I'm really emotional," Todd Harvey said. "We've lost a great man and we've lost a good father to us all. He's just so loved in the racing industry and winning today is just really, really special. The horses have done me proud, they've done dad proud and I reckon he was riding them home from the sky." Harvey Jr had a long training career in WA, with the likes of Gr2 WA Guineas winner Kalatiara (Metal Storm-Bonny Guest, by What a Guest), and had been training in partnership with son Todd for a few years until he retired at the end of last season. Todd Harvey's two winners on Wednesday were 3YO gelding Metallon (Oratorio-Rubitawny, by Rubiton) and 4YO gelding Samsurian (Snippetson-Sambar, by More Than Ready). Metallon made it two wins from three starts, while Samsurian has two wins and three placings from 14 starts.Anamoe Fitness Edge a Plus in Guineas
Friday, 4th March 2022Royal Randwick's Gr1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) is likely to be run on a hugely testing surface even if the forecast rain bomb peters out ahead of Saturday. That's top of mind for Godolphin trainer James Cummings in his summation of what will be required to win against competition he's beaten before yet in conditions that neither Anamoe nor his main rivals Hilal and Coverge have experienced to date. "On the surface – I identified early on this campaign that he would seriously benefit from two lead up runs to be ready for the Randwick Guineas and I can see physically in the horse that those races have offered some benefit which is only going to help as we edge towards racing on a bottomless track. The horses are going to need to be very fit to be running well on the weekend and whilst he has never seen a heavy track, he has excellent soft track form. This horse has the ability to let down powerfully on rain-affected tracks." Cumming emphasised, "The Randwick Guineas has been a target race this preparation and arriving here, third-up in excellent form having won the city lead up, the Hobartville last start at Rosehill, he now switches to his preferred course at Randwick where he was so impressive in winning the ATC Sires Produce, and that was off the back of two starts before winning the time-honoured Todman Stakes." Anamoe is odds-on.Anamoe will appreciate the extra 200m of the Guineas (pic: Steve Hart)
A Rose by Any Other Name Just as Sweet
Friday, 4th March 2022The name of leading Gr2 Reisling Stakes contender Russian Conquest (Russian Revolution-My Conquestadory, by Artie Schiller) may, in the current political climate, not be cause for celebration, but come Saturday the connections of the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly could have a leading Gr1 Golden Slipper contender on their hands. A winner of her first two starts before second in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic behind current Gr1 Golden Slipper favourite Coolangatta (Written Tycoon), the Tommy Berry-ridden Russian Conquest will start Saturday's race as favourite, but with the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Greece (I Am Invincible-Maastricht, by Mastercraftsman) showing above average ability in her two trials, the Coolmore and partners raced latter filly has shown she will be fa ormidable competitor if she starts. A full-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Loving Gaby, Greece was a $1.2m Magic Millions yearling purchase from the draft of Kia Ora, and a victory by the filly would add a significant update to her Justify half-brother to be offered as Lot 267 at the upcoming Inglis Easter yearling sale. Dominant in her victory in the Gr3 Widden Stakes two starts back, if the Richard and Michael Freedman trained Queen Of The Ball (I Am Invincible-Miss Debutante, by Fastnet Rock) can show that form again, she's a strong chance to get her Golden Slipper plans right back on track. Trainer Annabel Neasham has already scratched last start Pierro Plate winner Mumbai Jewel (I Am Invincible), who will start in Melbourne instead; with the field now reduced to just seven, the likelihood of a wet track could see the numbers reduced even further.Eduardo Up to the Challenge at Randwick
Friday, 4th March 2022Third, beaten just over a length-and-a-half in the Gr1 Black Caviar Lightning down the Flemington straight behind Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) last start, the Joe Pride trained Eduardo (Host-Blushing by Fantastic Light) has headed back to his Warwick Farm base where he will tackle this Saturday's Gr2 Challenge Stakes at Randwick. Successful in the race 12 months prior, where he defeated Nature Strip (Nicconi-Strikeline, by Desert Sun), the outstanding sprinting duo will once again continue their rivalry in the Challenge Stakes, with the Chris Waller-trained World Champion Sprinter set to start favourite off the back of his nose second in the Lightning. As the only two runners under double figure odds, the pair have both had ten starts on rain affected tracks, both winning on seven occasions, clearly highlighting that Saturday's race will be a race in two. Another in the field with some solid wet form is the Mark Newnham-trained Splintex (Snitzel-Acquired, by O'Reilly), and although the stallion prospect has no first up form, the rising 6YO is a Group 2 winner on a heavy track in the past and could be a chance at odds. An interesting runner is the Hawkes Racing-trained Remarque (Snitzel-Response, by Charge Forward), with the 3YO tackling the open age sprinters for the first time in his short five starts career. Third in the Gr2 Run To The Rose behind Anamoe (Street Boss) before failing behind In The Congo (Snitzel) in the Gr1 Golden Rose, the Arrowfield Stud and partners raced full-brother to Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Estijaab (Snitzel), will need to start to highlight his black type class if a possible stallion career is on the cards.Eduardo relishes racing at Randwick (pic: Steve Hart)
General Dearth of Local Stamina Laid Bare
Friday, 4th March 2022Odd-spot: The extent to which Australia's breeding sector generally eschews stamina as a selected variable is patently obvious when one looks at the list of acceptances for Saturday's Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) on the undercard for Gr1 Canterbury Stakes and Gr1 Randwick Guineas Day in Sydney. The only two entries in the Royal Randwick feature field that are 'locally-bred' are Entente (Dundeel) – see below – and Olympic Gaze (Olympic Glory) although neither one's sire is Australian-bred. Unsurprisngly, there are four New Zealand-breds: Mightybeel, No Compromise, Kaapfever and Toomuchtobear. Great Britain is responsible for three runners: Mustajeer, Luncies and First in Line. France has similar representation via Sheraz, Zeyrek and True Marvel. And, finally, there are Irish-bred Knight's Order and German-bred Sweet Thomas to make up the balance. Entente is at $13 and Olympic Gaze at $126.Shocking Obsessed with Black Type Success
Friday, 4th March 2022John and Colleen Thompson’s Rich Hill Stud continues to go from strength to strength, with former Champion Australian Stayer Shocking (Street Cry) a great example of a stallion who, given the benefit of time, has shown just how good he is at stud. During the past season and-a-half, his Australian and New Zealand progeny have earned 136 Black Type points from 14 different stakes performers. Flying the flag, in particular, across the Tasman of late are I’m Thunderstruck, Elephant and Defribillate. Meanwhile, one of five current kiwi Group performers, Shocking’s daughter Self Obsession now leads the prestigious New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series on 24 points ahead of her Jamie Richards-trained stablemates Belle En Rouge (16 points), The Perfect Pink (12 points) and Imperatriz (7.5 points). According to NZB, Saturday’s Gr3 Sunline Vase (2100m), which features Belle En Rouge, and the Gr1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham – Self Obsessed is favourite – on March 19 are the final two legs of the 11-race series. There are 10 yearlings by Shocking catalogued for the forthcoming New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sales, which commence at Karaka on Monday.Shocking has 10 yearlings at Karaka (pic: Rich Hill Stud)
Weekend Black Type Schedule
Friday, 4th March 2022Out of the four Group 1 races scheduled for Saturday on a big card of Black Type racing, three of them are devoted to the 3YO category, comprising two in Australia and one in New Zealand. The latter’s distance is 2400m, being the time-honoured New Zealand Derby, however while the race title suggests a tussle between the colts and geldings, victory is likely to come from rising star 3YO filly La Crique (Vadamos) who is yet to taste defeat at Ellerslie. Guineas (plural) are important stallion-making races. That’s why it’s baffling that the Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington and Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Randwick are run on the same day. Like programming the Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond just 20 minutes apart, it dilutes and devalues the quality of both, and would be no different to Melbourne and Sydney hosting respective Formula One Grand Prix races on the same weekend.
